Limitless

A landscape of bubbles and intrepid women breaking free of these boundaries and reaching out for each other to create change, parallels how when orbitals overlap electrons may leave these restricted bounds, connect, activate and instigate a state change like conducting electricity. When women are isolated, and when atoms are isolated they are inert. But when atoms come into close proximity and their orbitals are allowed to overlap, there is a flurry of activity in the way that when women commune and break free of their isolation they can move, create and make magic.

This mural is inspired by the research of Dr. Nadya Mason, a Rosalyn Sussman Yalow Professor of Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. As a condensed matter experimentalist, she works on the quantum limits of low-dimensional systems. Mason is the Director of the Illinois Materials Research Science and Engineering Center.

The mural project was a partnership between the SS&TP Program Office, City of Albuquerque’s Public Art Urban Enhancement Division, CES, Meow Wolf Santa Fe, and the artist. Students from the Technology Leadership High School, also located in the Park, helped artist Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya finish painting the mural.
